Inlay Gem Stone Rings, Caring, Cleaning and Looking After

What Are Inlay Rings?: An inlay ring is a classic example of fine jewelry. In this ring one or more gemstones are very intricately inlaid into gold or sterling silver. The production process is very complicated and very few jewellers are able to provide good quality gemstone inlay rings. There are certain gemstones that are very suitable for using in gem stone inlay rings and these inlcude mother of pearl, turquoise, onyx, all colors of jade, opal, malachite and a few other gemstones. It is almost impossible to find a jeweller who is willing to make a single piece custom made inlay ring. Most sellers prefer large volume orders for such intricate jewellery. Kaisilver is the only provider of single piece, high end inlay gemstone rings in 14k or 18k white or yellow gold.

How Is An Inlay Gemstone Ring Made: We will explain the main process involved in making an inlay ring without getting very technical. The special care that your gemstone inlay ring needs when being worn, stored or cleaned is because of the intricate production processes involved. The first step to create an inlay ring would be to create a wax mould of the ring that you need. The ring size and shape and layout of various gemstones on the ring, will need to be perfectly detailed on this wax mould. The quality of the final ring casted in gold or sterling silver will depend on the quality of the wax mould that you make. The wax mould may require to be done many times before a perfect piece is got. Many jewellers choose to hurry this process and then attempt to cover up flaws in the later stages when the ring is ready and being given finishing touches. This is a wrong way to produce high end jewelry, the flaws will be disguised for a while, but will finally show up after a few months. The image below shows a wax mould made for the production of an inlay ring. Notice the details as it develops into the metal casting and the final inlay ring.

wax mould for the gemstone inlay ring

After the wax mould is the casting process for the inlay ring. This can be done in sterling silver or gold as required by the buyer. The casting takes the exact shape and size of the wax mould. Notice the notches in the metal, this is where the gemstones to be inlaid are placed. The casting is then cleaned and filed to give it a regular smooth finish. There is an important aspect in this inlay ring casting that you should observe. The notches that are made to hold the gemstones are just depressions in the metal and not completely cut through the metal. This makes the ring more strong and sturdy and also allows better bonding of the gemstones to the metal.

Metal casting for inlay rings with gemstones

The most interesting part of making an inlay ring is the process used to inlay the gemstones in the ring. This process is also one of the reasons why your inlay ring needs extra caring. In the first stage of gemstone inlay, the gemstones are cut to approximate sizes to fit the notches made in the casting. The pieces of gemstone are now stuck into the notches using a special type of glue. At this stage, the gemstone will protrude very slightly above the depth of the notch. The casting with the gemstones stuck is then left to dry for around 10 to 12 hours. The design of this gem stone inlay ring where the notches are mere depressions and not fully cut through the metal, provides for better bonding. This is because the surface area that has the glue is increased and this allows better contact of the gemstone with the metal below. The ring is polished after the glue has completely dried up. The polishing needs to be done for the gemstone and the metal (gold or sterling silver). This will ensure that the gemstones and surrounding gold are at the same level and smooth.

High quality inlay rings will always appear very smooth and will not show raised gold borders around the gemstone. This is something that you should observe when choosing an inlay ring with gemstones. Making an inlay ring is a very intricate process and requires an immense amount of skilled craftsmanship. Very few jewellers are equipped to handle this type of jewelry production.

Caring For Gemstone Inlay Rings: Most of the suggestions and tips for wearing, storing and cleaning inlay rings arise from the production process involved in making the ring.
An inlay ring is a very intricate jewel and is not suited for daily wear, it should also not be worn when doing a lot of physical activity like, playing games, gardening, car washing etc.
To clean your inlay gem stone ring wipe with a moist cloth and ensure that the cloth is soft and without hard objects like buttons and pins. The cloth should only be slightly moist and not dripping or soaking wet. If you follow this process regularly, your ring will not need severe cleaning and this will increase the life of the ring.
You should never soak your ring in water as this could ruin the adhesive that binds the gemstone to the metal ring. Creams and other jewelry cleaning solutions are not meant for inlay rings and other jewelry with gemstone inlay.
Do not use ultrasound cleaners for cleaning your inlay gemstone ring. The ring should also be protected from sharp objects as they could scratch and ruin the beauty of the ring.
