Iolite Gemstone Information

Iolite: This gemstone is called the gemstone of the Vikings, Iolite is also very often mistaken for Tanzanite. It derives it's name from the Greek work 'ios' which means violet. Before we get into explanations and reasons for the above issues, let us look at some technical information regarding the Iolite gem stone. This gemstone is bluish violet in color, Iolite with prominent blue color tones resembles blue sapphire and in lighter blue violet shades represents the more expensive, tanzanite. Iolite gemstones are quite durable and suited for setting in jewelry with a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness.

Iolite gem stone

The Iolite gemstone posesses a very important feature that is called pleochroism. This property posessed by a few other gemstones too, causes the gemstone to show different colors when viewed from different angles and sides. When viewed from one side the Iolite gemstone will show a gorgeous bluish violet color and when viewed from the other side, appears very pale colored and almost colorless. Because of this property the Iolite gemstone is difficult to cut. It needs to be cut by an expert to ensure that the gem stone shows the best color when viewed from above.
Why is Iolite referred to as the gemstone of the Vikings? There is a very interesting explanation to this and it is related to the pleochroism feature of the iolite gemstone. It is believed that the Vikings used the Iolite gemstone to help them navigate on the high seas when very far away from the coastline. Looking through the gemstone at a certain angle, the Vikings could determine the exact position of the sun and never got lost when on the high seas.

Iolite is not Tanzanite though in certain shades of colors, the gemstone could closely resemble Tanzanite. As a gemstone, Iolite is more durable than Tanzanite but is priced much lower as compared to Tanzanite. There is another interesting fact that relates to the price of Iolite and Tanzanite gemstones. Tanzanite was introduced in gemstone markets with a great amount of publicity, it was also referred to as the gemstone find of the century. This tremendous marketing campaign shot Tanzanite into the limelight and prices soon hit dizzy heights. Iolite is an equally gorgeous gemstone and if you are on a limited budget but love the color of Tanzanite, you should consider using a good quality Iolite gem stone instead.

When buying an Iolite gemstone, ensure that the gemstone is at least eye clean with no visible inclusions. As Tanzanite prices inch higher, good quality Iolite gem stones are expected to command increasing prices too. Another thing that you should pay attention to is to ensure that the best color of the Iolite gemstone is seen from the top of the gemstone. Skilled gemstone cutting is required for Iolite to exhibit it's best color as the gemstone shows different colors when viewed from different angles.

Many legends, beliefs and folklore surround the Iolite gemstone. Iolite is believed to be the gemstone of happiness and joy. It is also believed to posess Feng Shui properties that help build relationships with others. For people who believe in the special powers of gemstones, this gemstone is supposed to cure sore throat, varicose veins and various skin eruptions and blisters. We have already mentioned above, the special properties of Iolite that gave it the name of the 'gemstone of the Vikings'.

The main sources of Iolite are India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique and Brazil. Currently the gemstone is available in considerable quantities and this has resulted in Iolite having a moderate price tag. However larger sizes of good quality Iolite are beginning to show upward price trends and will therefore make good buys now.

Wholesale Silver Jewellry: We handle numerous queries each week from buyers of wholesale silver jewellry. Very often buyers do not understand why the first piece of such sterling silver jewellry is priced quite high. White Sapphires: When we talk of this gemstone, white sapphire jewellry is not something that immediately comes to mind. White sapphire is not very rare in small sizes that range from 1mm to 2.5mm, however larger sizes of white sapphire gemstones are not easy to find. In many cases larger white sapphire gems would have a slight tint of pale blue or a greenish blue tone. Many jewellers and buyers consider these very slightly color tinted gems to be white sapphires too. Sapphire has a hardness of 9 on the Moh's scale of hardness and this places it second only to diamonds which have a hardness of 10. Because of their good hardness, white sapphires, are quite often used as a substitute for diamonds in jewellry designs created with diamonds. It is true that jewellry with white sapphires can never match the glitter and brightness of diamond jewellry, but for buyers on a limited budget they make a good choice and provide a high degree of durability at a modest price.
