Kyanite Gem Stone, The Complete Report

All About Kyanite: Talking about the color of the kyanite gem stone, the vibrant blue or blue green tones is the most common color. In rare cases kyanite gems may also be found in grey or white color but these are very rare and blue kyanite remains the most common color. You will rarely find a kyanite gem stone with color that is even and uniform throughout the gem stone. In most cases, the color of this gem stone will be blotchy or appear in streaks. This is a characteristic of the kyanite gemstone. Good quality blue kyanite can resemble a gorgeous blue sapphire, but that is where the similarity ends. Sapphire unlike kyanite, has a very good hardness coming second only to diamond in terms of hardness and this makes it (sapphire) a very durable gem stone.

We will now spend a few moments considering the hardness and durability of the kyanite gem stone. There is something very peculiar about kyanite as the gem stone exhibits different degrees of hardness along the long axis and across it. The hardness of a gem stone is measured by the Moh's scale of hardness and kyanite has a hardness of around 4.5 along the long axis and 6.5 across the long axis. This means that the gemstone will break quite easily if struck along the long access. To make a comparison, sapphire has a hardness of 9 on the same Moh's scale and comes second to only diamond which has a hardness of 10. This is the reason why good quality blue kyanite can closely resemble a good quality blue sapphire, but the durability of the two gem stones are very different.

However, because of the lack of durability and sufficient hardness in the gem stone, you should not do heavy physical activity when wearing a kyanite gem stone ring or other kyanite jewelry. Minerals with are distinctly different but have the same chemical formula are referred to as polymorphs.

The kyanite gem stone is also believed to posess certain metaphysical properties. The belief is that there are two gems that never need cleansing and kyanite is one of them, the other gem stone that does not need cleansing is citrine. With it's ability to keep the mind calm, Kyanite is supposed to be ideal for calming the mind and controlling anxiety. it is also belived to be capable of getting rid of mental and spiritual confusion. When violent thoughts travel through the mind the kyanite gem stone is believed to dissolve anger and frustration.

The United States has fairly large deposits of kyanite and both low grade and high gem quality kyanite gem stones are mined. The other sources for this mineral are Brazil, Switzerland, Russia, Serbia, India and Kenya. Very good gem quality kyanite has also been mined in Nepal, though exact volumes of this mineral in Nepal are not known.
