White sapphire gem stones are a good substitute for diamonds when you find diamond jewellery to be out of your price range. White sapphires have good durability and come second only to diamonds when you compare hardness on the Moh's scale of hardness. However, large sizes of white sapphire are hard to find and most of the larger pieces have a slight pale blue or pale green tint to them. In this report we provide useful and straightforward information regarding white sapphires and you will be amazed at the beauty, durability and versatility of this gorgeous gemstone.

White Sapphire Gem Stone Information

White Sapphire: This gemstone is not very common in gem quality and larger sizes of good quality white sapphires are even more rare. White sapphire is genuine sapphire that is colorless and has the same hardness as blue sapphires and sapphires in other colors. There are some sapphires with a very pale tint of blue, pink or yellow and these are not entirely colorless, however many traders refer to these as white sapphire gem stones.

There are a few reasons why white sapphire is used instead of diamonds and the most important reason is the price of white sapphires which is much less as compared to diamonds. The second reason is that the hardness of white sapphire (infact all sapphires) is second only to diamonds. Diamonds have a hardness of 10 on the Moh's scale and sapphires come a close second with a hardness of 9. This is what makes the white sapphire gemstone durable and suited to jewellery making.

Since this newsletter is not supposed to be a sales campaign, we will also like to mention that white sapphires will not glitter and shine as much as real diamonds. But the gemstone is an excellent choice for those who cannot afford the high price of real diamonds. It is also a precious gemstone with a good degree of hardness. Gem quality white sapphire stone is generally used as accent stones in jewellery. Another gemstone that is often used to replace diamonds in jewellery is white zircon, but this gemstone has a lower degree of hardness as compared to white sapphire stone and is therefore not as durable as white sapphire.
Gem quality white sapphires are generally found in smaller sizes ranging from 1.5mm to 2.5mm. Larger sizes are hard to find but you should be aware of one more fact. In many cases sapphires with very pale colors are also called 'colorless' sapphires and therefore classified as white sapphires. Various heat enhancement processes are tried out and in certain cases sapphires lose their color and become very pale blue, pink or yellow. There are then used as 'white sapphires' by buyers and sellers.
The main sources of white sapphire stones are Sri Lanka, Australia, Thailand, Burma, Madagascar, Cambodia and Tanzania. Most of the larger sizes of white sapphire gems available today are procured from Sri Lanka and are commonly referred to as 'Ceylon white sapphires'.

More Interesting Information

Wholesale Silver jewellery: Read the complete report on wholesale sterling silver jewelry and understand the issues and problems involved from the buyers and sellers point of view. Thailand is a major player in the silver jewellery sector, but low profit margins and the increasing demand for gold jewellery are causing many silver jewellery manufacturers to either shut down or move to gold jewellery manufacturing. In these circumstances it is important that the buyer and seller work together and ensure that both sides gain from the business relationship. When it comes to good quality wholesale sterling silver jewellery, reduced producing sources ensure that the buyer is no longer king, at the same time the seller needs to provide good value or risk going out of business. Iolite Gem Stones: Gem quality iolite gemstones look gorgeous but this gemstone is just gaining popularity and will soon reach it's full potential. Iolite has very often been associated and compared with Tanzanite but the truth is that iolite is not tanzanite, though some shades of iolite could closely resemble the color of Tanzanite. Iolite is also priced much lower as compared to Tanzanite and the reasons for price differences are very interesting. The gemstone is also more durable as compared to Tanzanite. In the early days iolite was referred to as, the gemstone of the Vikings since it was supposed to be capable of pointing to the direction of the sun even on the high seas and in heavily cloudy conditions. Our complete report on the Iolite gemstone covers all these and more in detail, and makes very interesting reading.
